Schwyzer 514). -- A remarkable similarity shows Skt. pár-van- n. `knot, joint, section'. Schulze Q. 109f., 116ff. concludes from this a special word πεῖραρ with the meaning `knot' (μ 51 a.o., h. Ap. 129), with the ptc. πειρήναντε `knotting, kn. confirming' (χ 175, 192); very attractive, but with the in other places (e.g. Ν 358) hardly rejectable meaning `rope, line' (from `rope-, line-end'?) one finds even so no solution. After Krause Glotta 25, 148 stands beside πεῖραρ `end' a special πεῖραρ `line' to σπεῖρα, σπάρτον; to be rejected. For a uniform πεῖραρ (s. Bq w. older lit.) a.o. Niedermann Glotta 19, 7, Björck Mél. Bq 1, 143ff. -- In the sense of `end, frontier' πεῖραρ \< *πέρ-Ϝαρ belongs in any case to the great group πείρω, πέρᾱ etc. (prob. also πεῖρα); the orig. function of the element περ-, whether verbal or nominal, can no longer be decided. To be rejected the identification of πόλις from *pu̯olis with Arm. k'alak` `town' (Winter Lang. 31,8).-- Old word for `castle, refugecastle', except in Greek further only in the east attested (cf. Kretschmer Glotta 22, 107, Porzig Gliederung 173): Skt. pū́r f., acc. púr-am, Lith. pilìs f. Both the Skt. and the Lith. word show zero grade, which has also been considered possible for πόλις (Schwyzer 344); the i-stem in πόλ-ις and pil-ìs is secondary enlargement. Thee repeated proposals, to connect this very ancient word for `citadel' with the verb for `fill' ( πίμπλημι; since Pott) or for `dump' (Lith. pìlti; Fick; lastly Fraenkel Zeitschr. slav. There is however, no indication that δᾶ (s.v.) means `earth' (though it has also been assumed in the name Poseidon). Nach Ehrlich Betonung 62ff. (with Fraenkel Lexis 3, 50ff.), from *Δασ-μάτηρ, from IE *dm̥s-, gen. of * dem- `house' (cf. δεσπότης); rightly rejected by Kretschmer Glotta 6, 294. Pisani IF 53, 28ff. and Georgiev Urgriechen und Illyrier (Sofia 1937) 9ff., 20ff. consider the word, like Δαμία, Δμία etc. as Illyrian and compare Alb. dhe `earth' (s. χθών); rejected by Kretschmer Glotta 27, 31.     w. verbs of concealing, hiding, hindering, the pers. from whom someth. is concealed is found w. ἀπό; so κρύπτειν τι ἀπό τινος, παρακαλύπτειν τι ἀπό τινος, κωλύειν τι ἀπό τινος; s. the entries.

In such cases ἀπό freq. denotes the one who indirectly originates an action, and can be transl. at the hands of, by command of: πολλὰ παθεῖν ἀ. τ. πρεσβυτέρων suffer much at the hands of the elders Mt 16:21; cp. Lk 9:22; 17:25, where the emphasis is to be placed on παθεῖν, not on ἀποδοκιμασθῆναι. In ἀ. θεοῦ πειράζομαι the thought is that the temptation is caused by God, though not actually carried out by God Js 1:13. ἡτοιμασμένος ἀ. τοῦ θεοῦ prepared by God’s command, not by God in person Rv 12:6.
    In a few expr. ἀπό helps to take the place of an adverb. ἀπὸ μέρους, s. μέρος 1c.—ἡμέρᾳ ἀφʼ ἡμέρας day by day GJs 12:3.—ἀπὸ μιᾶς (acc. to Wlh., Einl.2 26, an Aramaism, min ḥădā˒=at once [s. MBlack, An Aramaic Approach3, ’67, 113]; but this does not explain the fem. gender, found also in the formulaic ἐπὶ μιᾶς Maxim. Tyr. 6, 3f En 99:9 [s. SAalen, NTS 13, ’67, 3] and in Mod. Gk. μὲ μιᾶς at once [Thumb §162 note 2]. PSI 286, 22 uses ἀπὸ μιᾶς of a payment made ‘at once’; on the phrase s. New Docs 2, 189. Orig. γνώμης might have been a part of the expr. [Philo, Spec. Leg. 3, 73], or ὁρμῆς [Thu. 7, 71, 6], or γλώσσης [Cass. Dio 44, 36, 2], or φωνῆς [Herodian 1, 4, 8]; cp. ἀπὸ μιᾶς φωνῆς Plut., Mor. 502d of an echo; s. B-D-F §241, 6) unanimously, alike, in concert Lk 14:18. Sim. ἀπὸ τ. καρδιῶν fr. (Brugmann; e.g. 4239); on the question Holt Les noms d'action en - σις 40f., G. Liebert Das Nominalsuffix -ti- im Aind. (Lund 1949) 142ff. After Benveniste Origines 83 we should rather reconstruct an old neuter *τὸ μάντι `divination'; but μαντι-πόλος, adduced by B., can easily be explained differently, s. above. Both the weak marrow and the weak muscles form an opposition to the hard knuckle. As in Latin by medulla, in Greek the old word for `marrow' in Skt. majján-, OHG mark etc. was replaced by μυελός (Porzig Gliederung 211). -- Wrong older interpretations were rejected by Bq. But the word has no further etymology; Chantraine Fom. 244 is prob. right that the word is Pre-Greek. Fur. 350 adduces μυαλός as evidence, but this may be recent and is unreliable.

    Etymology: The above formal system is as a whole built on the root σβεσ- in σβέσ-σαι and ἄ-σβεσ-τος. To the aorist σβέσ(σ)αι joined σβέννυμι from *σβέσ-νυ-μι (on the phonetics Schwyzer 697), σβέσω, σβεσθῆναι, ἔσβεσμαι. To this came as innovation ἔσβην, σβῆναι (after ἔστην, ἐκάην, ἐάγην etc.), to which came σβήσομαι, ἔσβηκα. On itself stands κατα-σβῶσαι, which may have an old lengthened grade (cf. below), but which can also with ζόασον, ζοάσεις (s. ab.) be understood as an iterativ (from *σβοῆσαι) of uncertain date. Cf. (with partly diff. view) Schwyzer 719 and 743 w. n. 1. From the byforms with ζ-, ζείναμεν etc., one can conclude for σβέσ(σ)αι, σβέννυμι to an IE * sgʷes-, which cannot be separated from other verbs for `extinguish': Lith. gęs-tù, gès-ti `extinguish, die out', caus. ges-aũ, -ýti `extinguish', Slav., e.g. OCS u-gašǫ, u-gasiti `extinguish' (IE * gʷōs-; also in - σβῶσαι?; s. ab.), Toch. AB käs- `extinguish'; prob. also Skt. jásate `is extinguished', jāsayati `exhaust'. Hitt. kišt-'be extinguished, perish' (e.g. 3. sg. kištari) is however incompatable with the labiovelar in σβέννυμι. If we posit a pure velar g, which is possible for all other languages, σβέννυμαι must be separated. -- Through the initial σ- Greek is distinguished from its cognates. Prob. it concerns a prefix (after Prellwitz s. v. a mutilated ἐξ-). Diff.     Derivatives: ἐγ-κυτί(ς) `to the skin' (s. v.)
    Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [952] * sk(e)u-t- `cover etc.'
    Etymology: Uncertain κυτίς `cupboard, box' (sch. Ar. Pax 665); for κοιτίς? Of old connected with σκῦτος, Lat. cutis `skin', Germ., e.g. OHG hūt ' Haut' etc. The word was split (e.g. by Curtius) in two: 1. `skin', 2. `hollow' (to κυέω etc.) [which would have a long ῡ]. For one source Walde LEW2 s. cunnus with a meaning `cover, conceal' = `conceal something, vault (around)(?)' (accepted by Bq); rejected by WP. 2, 546. A meaning `cover, skin' can hardly be demonstrated for κύτος and is also not necessary for ἐγ-κυτί (s. above). Connection with the group of κυέω however cannot without difficulty be assumed, as per Frisk; for the short vowel (against κῦ-μα etc.) he refers to Lat. cŭ-mŭlus [but does this belong here?] and W.-Hofmann s. v.; (formation like ἔν-τος?). - Unclear. I see no connection with κυέω. The variation long: short is dificult.
